Cool Tune from Sleigh Bells

Everyone likes cool things. What's cooler than driving around in an old Firebird, through the desert, with a dead guy while wearing an acid wash jean jacket, Wayfarers, Motley Crue cut off leather gloves, studded wristbands, huge hoop earrings and a bullet belt. I'm in love.

The Heavy: They are heavy, but with extra groove

Music gets you going. Makes you move. Makes your head bob. Makes you feel good.

The Heavy does all these things. Cool production, great songs, and a great singer.

Check out a couple of tracks from their 2009 release The House That Dirt Built.

"How You Like Me Now"

and "Sixteen"

Simon Wilcox is Amazing!

Have you heard of Simon Wilcox? She describes herself as "a singer/songwriter with a boy's name" and she is David Wilcox's daughter. Her music is mellow and energetic and easy to listen to and multi-layered and intense and beautiful.

Here's "Beatbox" and "Eyes on You" from The Charm and the Strange from 2007.

and "Mommies and Daddies" and "Right Ride" from 2004's Smart Function.

Diamond Rings. Oh YEAH!

I've always had a thing for rock guitars with dancey drum machine beats. That's what first caught my ear when I heard the tune "Something Else" by Diamond Rings. His other tunes are good pop songs. He performed in Toronto opening for Robyn a while back. His album Special Affections is out now.

This one's a little mellower, called "It's Not My Party". Some of the video was shot a few minutes from where I live.

And here's "Show Me Your Stuff".

Cool Canadians - Mother Mother

Well the telephone is ringing,
Is that my mother on the phone?
Telephone is ringing,
Is that my mother on the phone?
The telephone is screaming,
Won't she leave me alone?
The telephone is ringing,
Is that my mother on the phone?

Well every girl that I go out with
Becomes my mother in the end.
Every girl I go out with
Becomes my mother in the end.
Well I hear my mother calling,
But I don't need her as a friend.
Well every girl I go out with
Becomes my mother in the end.

Oh, Oh mother
Oh mother dear please listen
And don't devour me.
Oh mother dear please listen
Don't devour me.
Oh women please have mercy
Let this poor boy be.
Oh mother dear please listen
And don't devour me.
Oh mother......

Well the telephone is ringing
Is that my mother on the phone?
Telephone is ringing
Is that my mother on the phone?
Oh mother

I was going to do a big piece on cool Canadian bands, and I still might, but for now, here's a really cool song from a really cool Canadian band called Mother Mother. The song is the title track from their O My Heart album.

Oh yeah, they've got a new album called Eureka coming out March 15 and here's the first track, called "The Stand".

I know.

Beat's so Lonely. You can say that again.

When this song came out I had a band. I'm that old. And we used to play it. But we didn't play the whole boring bit at the beginning. Just start the video about 1 minute in and you're good to go.

Where is Charlie Sexton these days anyway? Apparently playing guitar for Bob Dylan.

Do you like playful sex?

Their called Asobi Seksu, which apparently means playful sex in Japanese. They have a new album out called Fluorescence and here's the video for "Trails".

And if you're new to the band, here are a couple from Citrus. The first one's called "Thursday",

And this is "Goodbye".

And from Hush, here's "Me & Mary".

And "Transparence".

The Odd Combinations of the iPod

Do you listen to shuffled mixes of songs on your iPod? It's pretty much all I listen to on mine. I have a series of smart playlists that are set up to give me a mix of stuff I love, along with new stuff and random other songs. It's like having my own radio station with a great mix of favourites and new stuff.

Although sometimes the mixes are a little shocking.

Take the example below. I was flying back from vacation, just snoozing and listening to a mix of high-rated tunes. I was grooving along to Tool's "Prison Sex" and as soon as it ended, I was greeted by a sweet, soft voice of Morcheeba's "Rome Wasn't Built in a Day". Check it -

Good song! Yeasayer!

Just a cool tune.
