Duchess Says are from Montreal. They're described as dance-punk veterans and they headlined the second night of Wavelength Festival at The Garrison. Singer A-Claude certainly makes a strong impression with her facial expressions and jeering, taunting gestures towards the audience. She might be trying to coax a reaction, she might be trying to start a fight and she might be trying to hurt herself.
The music has a funky, art-rock vibe with enough hooks and dance-ability to keep the band and the crowd moving. A-Claude's crazy eyes and highly interactive presence mix well with the band's 80s new wave influenced vibe. They've promised new music this year, so be on the lookout.

Wavelength Festival 16 - February 12-14, 2016 - Toronto
I wanted to check out Camp Wavelength Festival down on the Toronto Island this past summer. Unfortunately, I couldn't make it work. I truly hope I'm more successful with the winter version, which is coming up on February 12 through 14. This is their 16th annual festival and it features Duchess Says, Foxes in Fiction, Foxtrott, Thus Owls, Calvin Love, Soupcans, She Devils, Steven Lambke, Partner and more.
An All-Access Festival Pass gets you in to the whole thing for a very reasonable $39. You can grab your advance tickets at Rotate This (801 Queen St. W.), Soundscapes (572 College St.), Tiny Record Shop (804 Queen E.), or Ticketfly.com.
Give a listen to some of the great emerging artists being featured in the festival in the player below and check out the line-up details for each night on Wavelength's site. The evening shows take place at The Garrison and daytime shows are at Markham House City Building Lab.
I'm looking forward to discovering a bunch of great new music, and to seeing some familiar bands, like Beliefs, who I shot at one of my first real photo gigs a The Horseshoe, and who I haven't seen in way too long. I'm also looking forward to Programm, Calvin Love, Partner, Thus Owls and Duchess Says.
