New music from Young Galaxy - Body from Falsework

Young Galaxy have announced the release of their next album. It's going to be called Falsework and it comes out October 30. It was produced by Dan Lissvik who produced their last couple of albums. We get to check out the cool dance track "Body" right now. It's good and catchy and fun. Just like we like our Young Galaxies.

Two new Young Galaxy clips: Fever and Hard to Tell

Here are two more videos from Young Galaxy's Ultramarine. They are for the tunes "Fever" and "Hard to Tell". This album was very deservingly nominated for this year's Polaris Prize. And I do recommend seeing these guys live. They put on a fun show.

The Top 50: The best songs of 2013, according to me. The year's most awesome and cool pop, indie, and alternative songs.

As the year progresses, I'm usually not aware of whether it's a great year for music or not. By about mid-year, I'm thinking that I have no idea what I'd put on a "best of" list. iTunes certainly helps by letting me see my top rated songs released in any given year.

Overall, it felt like more of a year of pop than anything else. We got tons of great pop melodies, and I love it. There's lots of other stuff in here too, including lots of loud guitars, which I also love.

Check out the list of my 50 favourite tunes of 2013.

Young Galaxy and Alvvays at The Hoxton

On November 22, I caught Young Galaxy and Alvvays at The Hoxton here in Toronto. I had been meaning to see Young Galaxy for a long time and finally got out to a show. I saw Alvvays opening for The Joy Formidable at The Mod Club back in November 2012.

I put up the lead pic on purpose. Not because it's a good pic (it's not) but rather to show how dark Young Galaxy turned the lights for their show. They sounded great but at times all but disappeared on stage. No worries. It's the music we were there for, and the music delivered.
Highlights of the set for me were "Pretty Boy", "Fall For You", "New Summer" and the encore of Erasure's "A Little Respect". That cover was a perfect fit for Young Galaxy. Overall, it was a fun show in a good venue. Then we all shuffled out and made room for the late show of the evening at The Hoxton.

Here are a bunch of great tunes from Young Galaxy for your listening and dancing pleasure:

"Crying My Heart Out"

"Blown Minded"

"Pretty Boy"

"Sleepwalk with Me"

"Fall For You"

"New Summer"

"We Have Everything"

"A Little Respect" by Erasure

Alvvays were into their set when we arrived. They're a Toronto-based, self-described jangle pop band. To me, they sounded more powerful and self-assured than they did at The Mod Club show. Good stuff and I'd surely venture out to see them again.
Here's their official video and another tune:

"Adult Diversion"

"Archie, Marry Me"

Overall, it was a great night of firsts for me: First time seeing Young Galaxy, first gig at The Hoxton and first time using a big DSLR at a show. Definitely learned a lot about the camera by making lots of mistakes. I'll get better with practice...

New Young Galaxy video for Sleepwalk With Me

I feel like I've been writing about Young Galaxy an awful lot lately. They teased out some new tunes, then they released Ultramarine, then they were nominated for the Polaris Prize, then they released a deluxe version of Ultramarine, and now they have a new video for the tune "Sleepwalk With Me".

I invite you to check it out below. It does indeed sound like it could be the soundtrack to sleepwalking.

They're playing November 22 at The Hoxton in Toronto. Look for yet another post after that gig.

More new Young Galaxy tracks from deluxe Ultramarine release revealed

On September 24, Young Galaxy will release the deluxe version of the Polaris Prize nominated album Ultramarine. I previously posted the track "Crying My Heart Out" and now we get to listen to two more: the cool and slick "Talk to Her" and the uber easy going "Sea Drug", all of which are on the new release.

Cool tunes!

They're also performing at The Hoxton in Toronto on November 22. Hope to see you there!

Deluxe version of Ultramarine from Young Galaxy on the way

Wouldn't it be cool if Young Galaxy won the Polaris Prize with their Ultramarine album? It sure would.

The day after the Polaris gala, on September 24, Young Galaxy are releasing a deluxe edition of Ultramarine. This tune, "Crying My Heart Out", is on it.

And in case you missed it, like I did, here's the video for "Fall For You".

Arts & Crafts, an awesome Canadian indie label, recently celebrated their tenth anniversary. To honour them, here are 10 songs from 10 bands who were, or still are, on Arts & Crafts.

Los Campesinos amazing tune "You! Me! Dancing!" appeared on their 2007 EP Sticking Fingers Into Sockets and their 2008 album Hold On Now, Youngster.

Cool songs from the Polaris Prize long list

Those music-loving folks at The Polaris Music Prize have released this year's long list of nominees. I'll be picking through it and discovering some new stuff I've never heard before, but for now, I'll just post a few of the familiar standouts from the list, from my perspective.

Best of luck to all the nominees for exposure, success and music-making.

The Luyas, Animator, "Fifty Fifty"

Metric, Synthetica, "Youth Without Youth"

METZ, METZ, "Wet Blanket"

AC Newman, Shut Down The Streets, "I'm Not Talking"

Purity Ring, Shrines, "Fineshrine"

Tegan and Sara, Heartthrob, "Closer"

Young Galaxy, Ultramarine, "Pretty Boy"

I really don't want to make a prediction on who will win for three reasons:
  1. I'm not familiar with all the albums, so it would be unfair
  2. Even among the artists I know, there are so many great songs
  3. I don't usually like the band/album that wins

Video for New Summer by Young Galaxy

Here's the latest clip from Young Galaxy's recently-released album Ultramarine. The tune is "New Summer" and yes, I did feature the song when it was first previewed. The easy going tune makes me regret not going to see them at Lee's Palace a couple of weeks ago. Just wasn't feeling up for the night out...

Young Galaxy video for Pretty Boy

Young Galaxy just released Ultramarine, their latest long player. I posted this song back in February, and now it's got an official video. Yay!

New Young Galaxy - New Summer

It's been a mellow, female vocalist-focused few days here at One In Ten Words. I guess these things flow in cycles sometimes.

Young Galaxy have a new album, called Ultramarine, coming out April 23. I featured a song called "Pretty Boy" in a previous post. Here's another song, this one called "New Summer". It's good!

New Young Galaxy

Back in the summer, Young Galaxy put out a new single with a great couple of tracks. Here's a new tune from their new album Ultramarine, which is out April 23.

New Young Galaxy Songs

Here's the latest from Young Galaxy. It's a track called "Shoreless Kid" from their new 7". The flip side, "Youth is Wasted on the Young", was posted the other day on Stereogum. You can check them both out below. Cool tunes.

New Young Galaxy On It's Way!

Young Galaxy have a new album on the way. It's called Invisible Republic and it's out August 25. There's a free mp3 link for the song "Long Live The Fallen World" on their home page and you can check out some songs on their myspace.

Exclaim has an article where the band talks about their split from label Arts & Crafts.

They've announced their album release shows via their myspace blog:
Sept 9th, Zaphod Beeblebrox Ottawa, Ont. Canada
Sept 10th, The Drake Hotel Toronto, Ont, Canada
Sept 11th, Il Motore Montreal, Que. Canada

Also via their myspace blog, they've announce that there are 4 new songs on MTV Canada's web site. They sound good to me.

Here's the video for my favourite song from their eponymous release, available on emusic.
