New Spoon video for Inside Out

Spoon put out one of my favourite albums of 2014 with They Want My Soul. They're still touring in support of this album with Toronto dates on June 23 and 24 at the Phoenix Concert Theatre. So it's only appropriate that they're still releasing videos from the album. This one's for they hypnotic and chilled out "Inside Out".

Spoon Gimme Fiction is 10

2005's Gimme Fiction may have been Spoon's fifth album, but it was my introduction to their power pop brilliance. It's been 10 years since this great album was unleashed. The sparse yet intricate arrangements, building intertwining riffs with sometimes traditional and sometimes off-kilter phrasing and structures, are at once unique and accessible, and quintessentially Spoon.

Enjoy some of my favourite tunes from this album:

"I Turn My Camera On

"Sister Jack"

"The Two Sides of Monsieur Valentine"

"They Never Got You"

"My Mathematical Mind"

Spoon: They Want My Soul catch up

Spoon's new album They Want My Soul comes out August 5. This post is a quick catch-up on the tunes from the new album that they've let us hear so far. All these tunes, plus the ones they played at their Yonge-Dundas show for NXNE, sound great.

Spoon at NXNE

It's really a shame that I never saw Spoon play live before their free Yonge-Dundas Square performance for NXNE. They are a great band. They hit the stage on the Saturday night of NXNE before the sun had set and wasted no time in rocking us all into the night.

They played a massive setlist of 22 songs, including a 3-song encore. Lucky for me, they hit up almost all the tunes that I'd been dying to hear them play live. They also mixed in some new tunes from their August 5 album They Want My Soul. We've heard "Rent I Pay" already, and they opened the show with "Knock Knock Knock" and later let us hear "Rainy Taxi". Needless to say, I'm looking forward to this release.

Here are a bunch of tunes - highlights from the set they played for me and thousands of lucky Torontonians.

"Don't You Evah"

"Anything You Want"

"The Way We Get By"

"I Turn My Camera On" which may have been the first Spoon song I ever heard.

"My Mathematical Mind"

"Don't Make Me a Target"

"You Got Yr. Cherry Bomb"

"Rainy Taxi"

"The Underdog"

"Rent I Pay"

"Got Nuffin"

They finished up the main set with "Black Like Me" and came back to start the encore with "The Beast And Dragon, Adored"

They finally closed out the night with "Trouble Comes Running". Great tune to finish off a high energy set.

New Spoon!

A while back, Spoon put a countdown timer on their site with the ominous initials R.I.P. Many speculated that it was the title of their new album or perhaps a new song. No one suggested that it was a countdown to the dissolution of the band.

Fortunately, it wasn't the latter. It was a countdown to the song "Rent I Pay" and the announcement of the new album They Want My Soul. Now we get to hear it and watch an unofficial video at the same time. The album comes out August 5.

And the song? Well, obviously hit "play" and check it out for yourself, but it's a song that's worth the four year wait since Transference. Great beat, cool guitars, classic Spoon. I'm really looking forward to the new album.

Go see Spoon live at NXNE at Yonge-Dundas Square on June 21.

Favourites: Spoon with Car Radio

Seriously. Great tune. If you don't know it, listen to it. If you know it, listen to it again. It's worth it.

Favourites: Spoon me

Spoon are a great indie rock band. They've been putting out consistently solid albums since 2000. This track, "The Underdog" from 2007's Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga, is one of my all time favourites.
