I've said it before and I'll say it again, in less than a year, and, yeah, during the very first performance I witnessed, Sam Coffey and The Iron Lungs have become one of my favourite bands. Their music is right up my alley; powerhouse guitar rock / power pop with big hooks and huge, addictive choruses, probably influenced by some of my favourite classic guitar-rock/power pop bands from my youth.

This performance was a special St. Patrick's Eve performance at The Elora Brewing Company. We got to hear all of my favourite tunes, plus a new one from their forthcoming album. Sam Coffey and The Iron Lungs and openers Long Range Hustle made the drive from Toronto well worthwhile.

Please check out my photos and some music from Long Range Hustle and my photos of Sam Coffey and The Iron Lungs from Riverfest Elora last summer and from The Phoenix Concert Theatre when they opened for Frank Turner.

Here are some of my favourite tunes from Sam Coffey and The Iron Lungs. Listen up and if you like what you hear, get out to a show. There was a couple at this Elora gig that drove all the way from Florida to see the band. They've set the bar and you know the show was worth it.

'Twas the night before St Patrick's Day at The Elora Brewing Company. Long Range Hustle took to the stage to rock the house. They showed off their fantastic harmonies, rock solid musicianship, great dynamics and cool tunes during their varied set. We even got a cover of The Black Keys' "Gold on the Ceiling".

Their new album Town is fresh out for consumption and it sounds great. Check out some of Long Range Hustle's awesome tunes below and get out to see them live.

And don't forget to take a peek at my photos and listen to some music from the night's headliners, Sam Coffey and The Iron Lungs.

Mexican garage-punk band Le Butcherettes display a powerful execution of an artistic vision. Teri Gender Bender and her band put out consistently boundary-pushing music with intensity and passion. Their live show is the perfect visual and auditory presentation of their art.

We've covered them a couple of times now, both shows at Velvet Underground. Click here and here for shots from 2018 and 2016.

Check out my photos of Stars at Night, who did an awesome job opening the show.

And get out to see Le Butcherettes when you have the chance.

In the meantime, here's a bunch of music from the band's outstanding new album, bi/MENTAL.

Stars at Night are an alternative rock band that hail from sunny Los Angeles California. They were here in Toronto on a cold winter's night opening for Le Butcherettes at The Drake Underground. Please click through to check out my shots from their set.

Stars at Night play tunes that are heavy, powerful and intense. The music is empowering and alive. I would happily see the band perform again and recommend you check out their music below and their live show.

I think it says a lot about being Canadian that no one could really answer the question that Stars at Night asked us, "What is unique about Toronto?" Some weak responses like "Neil Young" and "high rent" were heard. Not that I could think of anything to say either. Later on "we’re too nice" and "crack-smoking mayor" came to mind. We'll have to work on that. Even though we don't like to aggrandize ourselves.

Bob Mould and his band just released his latest album Sunshine Rock and they’re out on tour. They hit up Toronto’s Phoenix Concert Theatre and I got to be there to capture the incredible set.

Bob seems to be having a great time over the past decade or decade and a half. He seems to have completely come to terms with his past and has been playing HĆ¼sker DĆ¼ and Sugar tunes throughout his sets. It’s amazing to hear the breadth of his musical career presented so energetically. With his solid and well established rhythm section of drummer Jon Wurster and bassist Jason Narducy, the songs all sound fresh and energetic and full of life, delivered with power that few bands can muster.

The show started off with a super-strong combination of tunes from Bob Mould's solo catalogue, Sugar and HĆ¼sker DĆ¼. Bob's "The War", Sugar's "I Good Idea", HĆ¼sker's "I Apologize", Sugar's "Hoover Dam", Sugar's "Your Favourite Thing", and Bob's "See A Little Light". Wow.

From that point, the set continued to bounce between new and old, Bob's solo tunes, HĆ¼sker DĆ¼ tunes and one more Sugar tune until closing out with HĆ¼sker's "Chartered Trips" and an encore of "What Do You Want Me To Do?" from Sunshine Rock and "Black Confetti" from Patch the Sky.

The band sounded amazing. They're so tight and the playing style of each member perfectly contributes to and compliments the whole. They may just be the perfect power pop band, the perfect power trio, and the perfect combination of singer/guitarist/songwriter with the perfect rhythm section.

And with that, another amazing Bob Mould Band show was in the books. As always, I can't wait for next time. On this tour, Bob’s selling his own brand of flannel shirts, and he’s modelling one during the show. Looking sharp!

I've covered Bob and the band many times in the past, and attended many shows, including a Sugar show, long before having this blog. If you want to check out that coverage you can click here for coverage of their stop at The Horseshoe for CMW 2016, click here for their set at Riot Fest 2014, check out my pre-DSLR skills here from a 2013 show at The Horseshoe and here for a 2009 show at The Mod Club.

Check out my coverage of The Drew Thomson Foundation, who opened up this particular show, here.

Here are a bunch of my personal favourites from the band's set.

Sugar's "A Good Idea"

Sugar's "Hoover Dam"

"See A Little Light"

"The Descent"

"Sunshine Rock"

"Lost Faith"

Multi-faceted singer, songwriter and guitarist Drew Thomson, under the moniker of The Drew Thomson Foundation played The Phoenix Concert Theatre on February 18.

They performed a set of solid rock tunes with catchy choruses. I was impressed with the songs and their straight-up delivery. It's a very different musical presentation and attitude from Drew’s other famous band, Single Mothers.

The Drew Thomson Foundation was warming things up for Bob Mould and his band. Click here for my photos and coverage of their show.

You might think that by running a blog and seeing tons of shows, I'd have my ear to the ground about the special, secret happenings in Toronto's music scene. Sometimes it's true, but often, it's not. On this particular night, I was heading out to see a show by Chastity, Greys and Casper Skulls at The Recroom (click for those photos). I'd seen Casper Skulls many times and love their music. I'd heard of Chastity and Greys for a long time but hadn't caught a live performance. Little did I know that Alexisonfire were going to show up as surprise guests to close out the night.

This just happened to be my first time experiencing the live power of an Alexisonfire performance. It may have only been three songs, but it packed more energy and intensity into those three songs than many bands do into entire shows. The crowd also went insane and put out at least as much energy as Alexisonfire gave off. It was amazing to witness. Chastity's singer Brandon Williams joined the band on stage, too.

Alexisonfire had just been to the House of Strombo to record a live performance. Hope to see that published soon.

Here are the songs they played for us.

"We Are the Sound"

"Pulmonary Archery"

"This Could Be Anywhere in the World"

I caught Whitby Ontario post-punk band Chastity's live show after a long time of hearing about them. They played The Recroom to premiere their Death Lust film and perform with Greys, Casper Skulls and surprise special guests Alexisonfire.

After a few tunes to get us warmed up, the band rolled the film and started playing the album. The film is the visual accompaniment to the band's Death Lust album. It's a movie with a live music soundtrack. It all came off as perfectly artistic and engrossing while being genuine and honest. No pretension or affectation here.

The band takes the listener and audience member on a journey. There are wild dynamic shifts throughout the set. The audience did what they were told. Shut up during quiet parts and go nuts during the heavy parts.

The band announced that they're starting work an a new album now and I'm excited for what they do next.

Here are some tunes from their set.

"Manning Hill"

"Saliva"

"You're Scary Now"

"Children"

"Innocence"

"Chains"
