I've seen Diiv a couple of times before and I always appreciate their laid back and hypnotizing indie rock sounds. They were the first band I caught after returning to Field Trip after the thunderstorm delay. Yes, sadly I didn't make it back to see Charles Bradley.

The festival decided, rightly, to err on the side of caution and evacuate the site just before thunderstorms rolled in. They then had to assess incoming weather systems, negotiate a curfew extension with the City and reschedule as many acts as possible. Not an easy task and I think festival organizers did a great job balancing safety with attendees' desire to catch the second day of programming. With the tragic events at Rock Am Ring on the same weekend and the cancellation of Sunday's programming at Governor's Ball, safety was top of mind, as it should be.

Diiv talked about waiting at their hotel for word on whether they would perform or not as they delivered a consistent set of great tunes, as they always do. Their setlist included my favourites like "How Long Have You Known?", "Sometime", and "Doused".

Div. dive. drive. diiv. or whatever else you want to call them. or wherever they come from, they were a breath of indie rock on Time Festival's bill other than Mac DeMarco. I first caught them with Japandriods a couple of years back, and I like their début album Oshin a lot, so they were on my list of must-see bands at Time and they were the first band I photographed.

Their set was varied, hitting up their biggest hit so far "How Long Have You Known" as their second song, playing a bunch of new songs and album tracks, and closing with their other hit "Doused". Great set!

Since Diiv played in the full heat of the afternoon, I thought I'd throw in a couple of suggestions for next year's Time Festival. More water bottle filling stations are definitely required. There were only two spigots for the whole crowd, leading to some very long line-ups in the hot sun to get some water. Not to mention that the fill station was well-hidden and not everyone knew it was there. The city has a large cart that they can bring to these events. Also, maybe I just missed it, but there wasn't any bike parking. I usually like to cycle to Fort York festivals to avoid having to take transit to this part of town. I didn't see any bike parking like they arrange at TURF, much less a bike valet, at Time Festival. Hope that next year's festival is awesome and that these aspects can be improved upon.

Diiv are back in Toronto on October 11 for a show at The Danforth Music Hall with No Joy and Sunflower Bean. There's also some information floating around the webs that Dirty Ghosts are on this bill, but that's mentioned as being at The Hoxton. No matter what, that sounds like an excellent show that I'd love to attend.

New clip from DIIV - Wait

It's swirly. It's sexy. It's DIIV with the video for "Wait" from Oshin. It's NSFW due to nudity.

They're a cool live band as well. Check out my post on their show at the Phoenix in Toronto with Japandroids.

Japandroids and DIIV live at the Phoenix in Toronto

To cap off a very busy (for me, at least) year of concert-going, I caught a sold-out show by Japandroids with Diiv at the Phoenix Concert Theatre here in Toronto. It was an incredible night of talent that was the absolute perfect way to close out the season and allow me to put my earplugs up on the shelf for a few months of long, cold winter.
After walking in, backpacks in tow, setting up their own gear and doing a quick sound check, Diiv dove into their set. They played a solid set of tunes from Oshin while generally keeping to the shoegaze vibe with lots of energy. Definitely glad that I saw this band live.
Their Toronto stop marked the end of their tour with Japandroids. They left to head back to NYC for an appearance on Letterman. Check them out doing a fast-sounding version of "Doused" for Dave.

And here's the first song I heard from them, the great "How Long Have You Known?".

Confession time. I'm a cheater. I go to shows, I snap some uber crappy pictures with my hi-tech iPod Touch and I write up some stuff. I make certain assumptions. Like that someone is going to keep track of what they played and put it up on setlist.fm. Well, all you lazy slackers in Toronto, you let me down! So I'm assuming that they mostly played the same set as they did in Montreal the previous night. After all, they talked about how awesome the Montreal show was, and used it to whip the Toronto crowd into a frenzy by taunting them that they weren't going to let the Montreal audience be crazier than them, were they? Well, they didn't. Everyone in the room, along with those who took advantage of Brian King's offer to share the stage with them - for 10 seconds - made sure the Toronto show rocked.

They also told us what they thought of anyone's desire to go home early because the show was on a work/school night. Fuck that!

There were points in the show where I thought that if Scotty from Star Trek was running engineering for my earplugs, he would have been exclaiming, "Captain, they've got to turn it down! They can't take much more!"

As I watched this and many recent shows, I have been wondering whether smart phones and YouTube have made bands better. Since everything ends up recorded and up on the web, do bands have to pay more attention to getting it right when they know a concert flub won't be just a passing moment, soon to be forgotten by loyal fans?

Overall, it was a fantastic show from a couple of great bands. No doubt it was the last chance we'll all have to see Japandroids in such a relatively small room. Next time they're in Toronto, I'll bet they'll play somewhere like Kool Haus, or Sound Academy, and you won't see my ugly mug in the crowd. Good for them.

My favourite albums: Awesome and cool albums of 2012: My best of list: 20 Albums of 2012

2012 was no different from previous years for me in that I'm still more of a songs guy than an albums guy. It just takes longer for a whole album to show its charms to me and I struggled with what to put on this list, how to rank it, and even whether to do an albums list at all.

So here are the 20 albums from 2012 that made the biggest impression on me. So far. Alphabetically.

My favourite songs: Awesome and cool songs of 2012: My best of list: Top 60 songs: #20-1

It's been a great year for indie-alternative music. Maybe it's because I've been putting more emphasis on seeking out great music for the blog, or maybe it's just intergalactic forces. Whatever it is, I'll take it.

Just to avoid consistency of any kind, I've abandoned last year's idea of doing 2-year best of posts, like doing "The Best of 2011-2012".

Here's the final post featuring songs 20-1 of my favourite 60 songs released in 2012.

20. "Happy Pills" Norah Jones

19. "Let's Fall In Love" Mother Mother

Sometime by DIIV

According to the internet (and truly, when is it ever wrong?) DIIV are opening for Japandroids at their December 11 show at The Phoenix here in Toronto. I'm very happy to be attending that show. I think that both bands will shine on stage, with their different-but-equally-awesome guitar sounds swirling around my head at concert volume.

Here's the latest from DIIV's album Oshin. The song is "Sometime".

Doused by Diiv, Diiv with Doused

Diiv have released a video for "Doused" from their album Oshin.

Love the insistent beat, swirling guitar lines and hypnotic vocal cadence.

Check out DIIV

Have you heard of DIIV? They are one of those bands who fall victim to a cool name that some other band has already laid claim to. They used to be Dive, a band name taken by at least two bands. They just released their debut album Oshin. It's really, really good with swirling guitars and reverb soaked melodies. The first video is below for the track "How Long Have You Known?"
