Screaming Females from New Brunswick, New Jersey are one of my absolute favourite bands. Marissa Paternoster is one of my favourite guitar players and has one of probably the top three or four live guitar sounds ever. To say I was looking forward to this show at The Garrison would be an understatement.

Screaming Females' most recent album is 2018's All At Once and it's an incredible piece of art. The album came in as my favourite album of 2018 (check out the full list here) and the song "I'll Make You Sorry" came in at #2 on my favourite songs of 2018 (the full list is here).

I've always marvelled at and focused on Marissa's guitar playing and sound at the shows, and for whatever reason at this show I was hearing more of the full-band impact. They are unbelievably tight. The way that the band fits together and works as a solid unit is a marvel to behold. They've been together for years and it shows by how effortless they make the magic that they create seem to the listener and concert-goer.

Their setlist was amazing, featuring songs both old and new, and personally hitting many of my favourite tunes. Please check out my favourite tunes below and go see Screaming Females when they stop by your town.

This was my fifth time covering the band for the web site. Check out photos from their show at The Hard Luck earlier this year, from The Garrison in 2017, from their appearance at The Silver Dollar Room during NXNE 2016, and from The Garrison in 2015.

Screaming Females had Dark Thoughts along for their tour and they had locals Big School put on an impressive set to open the show. Check out my coverage of both of those bands by clicking the links.

I had a great time in 2018, in spite of the negativity that was flowing so heavily from so many sources. The music and the bands and the friends that surround them were my salvation. The positive energy and empowering messages coming from stage and speakers did a lot to help me from spiralling into the despair that politics, and the ugliness it emboldened, encouraged.

Please check out my other "best of" posts. My 20 Favourite Albums of 2018 list is here and I'll link my Favourite Concert Photos of 2018 when I have that finalized.

The hyperlinks in the song titles will take you to the tune itself if you want to check it out, the hyperlinks below each song link to my coverage of the artists, including my photos from those particular performances.

As always, thanks so much to the promoters, publicists, bands, management, festivals and venues that allow me to do this thing that I love to do.

All the best as we sail into 2019, whatever it happens to hold for us. Let's be positive, encouraging, empowering and above all, kind and understanding. It will go a long way to making the world a better place.

2018 was a pretty damn cool year in music. There were so many beautiful souls trying their best to fill the world with beauty, empowerment, kindness and positive strength. While looking at the ugliness, racism, intolerance and just plain outright stupidity that so many people were trying, and unfortunately succeeding, in promoting, I loved the positive messages that I was hearing from the stage and from my speakers. The list below is the 20 albums, plus 2, that hit me the hardest, in the best way, in 2018.

And I guess I should explain the "top 20, plus 2" thing. It's because there were two albums that really only came to my attention in the past year, even though they were released in 2017. They're just so amazing that I had to recognize them; to put them on this list, kinda, sorta.

Check out my other "best of" posts of 2018. My Top 50 Favourite Songs of 2018 list is right here. And I'll link my Favourite Concert Photos of 2018 when I have that finalized.

The hyperlinks below each artist and album name link to my coverage of the artists, including my photos from those particular performances.

Here's to hoping we can all make 2019 a kinder, more empowering and inclusive year.

Screaming Females from New Brunswick, New Jersey are easily one of my favourite live bands. Marissa Paternoster's guitar mastery is brilliant to behold. And that sound! That tone! The raw emotion that flows from her hands to the strings! She is a true guitar hero. Her vocals are as impassioned as the songs the band creates. The rhythm section completes the massive sound and keeps the energy level at their shows absolutely intense.

This show at Toronto's Hard Luck marked the fourth time that I've seen the band perform and for me it was easily the best. This was in no small part due to the fact that they included my favourite song, "Ripe" in the set, and that their new album All At Once is just completely fantastic.

The show also featured local alternative rockers Girlongirl and Radiator Hospital. Click through to see my pics from their sets.

Click the links to check out my photos from previous Screaming Females shows that I've photographed at The Garrison in 2017, The Silver Dollar Room in 2016 and The Garrison in 2015.

I love this band for their intensity, passion, musicianship and virtuosity. I started picking my favourites from this show's setlist, but ended up with the whole thing below. Take the opportunity to experience this amazing band live.

"Empty Head" opened the show

"Fall Asleep"

"Glass House" got the crowd going in full force

"Bird in Space"

"Rose Mountain"

"Step Outside"

"Ripe". My favourite Screamales song.

"Doom 84"

"Soft Domination"

"Deeply"

"Black Moon" was the intense closer for the main set

"It All Means Nothing" was the encore tune

Screaming Females are an amazing live band. I saw them for the first time in this very venue. Those photos are here. I caught their next Toronto show at The Silver Dollar Room during NXNE. Those photos are here.

Marissa Paternoster is easily one of my favourite guitarists and has one of the best guitar tones I've heard. The band delivers an incredible head full of rock every time I see them. The ferocious vocals and guitar playing counterpointed by Marissa's sweet demeanour in her between song banter. I love it.

The nice thing about the time it's taken for me to actually publish this post is that the band has new music out now.

Check out a couple of new tracks:

"Deeply"

"Glass House"

And some of my favourites:

"Hopeless"

"Ripe"

"Boyfriend"

"Empty Head"
