Riverfest Elora 2024: A compendium of posts - Concert Photos

Riverfest Elora on August 16-17, 2024 Photo by John Ordean at One In Ten Words oneintenwords.com toronto indie alternative live music blog concert photography pictures photos nikon d750 camera yyz photographer
It rained at Riverfest Elora 2024. I mean, it rained. I’ll be the first one to tell you that it always rains, at every music festival, and there’s usually some period of rain, rarely an early end to the night or a rejig of the schedule, but this time it rained all weekend long.

It was disappointing for everyone from the audience to the performers, the vendors, the crews, the volunteers, security, organizers, literally everyone, including us photographers.

I was looking forward to taking in Fleet Foxes on the Saturday night. I imagined their lush and intricate, emotional and enormously beautiful music rolling across Bissel Park and I was imagining a warm clear Elora evening for an artist whose sound I imagined would be an absolutely perfect fit for the vibe of Riverfest amongst the best of all Riverfest performances. Sadly, it was not to be.

The rain started as soon as festival opening artist Nyssa took the main stage. It became the theme of the weekend.

Although we were physically dampened, everyone made the best of it, embracing the rain until it became too much and the Saturday program had to be cut short.

I've been covering Riverfest for quite a while. Here are links to my coverage of previous years' festivities.

Bully is one of my favourite artists. I remember smiling when I read the name in the 2024 Riverfest Elora lineup announcement. They put on a great show, with power and grace and apparently some nerves,

I chose to embrace the rain for Bully's set. After shooting the first few songs, I covered up myself and my camera gear to protect from the rain and went out into the crowd to watch their set.

The band sounded great and they have so many great songs. You can find their setlist here

They said that they were happy to take a break from the US and enjoy Canada for a while. She suggested that all festivals should be in Canada. I do love that American artists almost universally mention how it just feels nicer here. Sadly the pessimistic part of me can’t help but feel that things are slipping, at least politically.

I've covered Bully a couple of times before, at Lee's Palace and at Field Trip 2016. Click on through for those photos.

During 2017 I've probably listened to the least music than I have in the past decade. Most of my favourite tunes of the year came from shows I've seen, bands I'm familiar with and many tunes that just happened to hit my ears the right way. Many of the loves of this year have not been deep and meaningful; they've been brief and fleeting one night stands of aural bliss. Forgive me.

I just have to have music in my life, especially live music. It makes my heart right and gives me balance, and helps me feel like a complete being.

Here are the albums that meant the most to me in a year when I have been sadly more absent from the care and feeding of this web site, and from music appreciation, than I’ve been in years.

There’s a melody that reaches into your soul, a voice that speaks to your values and your very humanity, a beat that makes you smile uncontrollably, and a hook that brings a tear to your eye; a joy that makes you feel whole. It’s love that comes through your ears from the unstoppable passion of another, through their music.

I can’t listen to everything; especially not in a crazy busy year like 2017. A year when work left me mentally exhausted most days meant I couldn’t get all the concert-going and photo-editing in that I wanted and much of my commute-listening was while otherwise mentally occupied with little things like driving. But undaunted I go into the yearly tradition of listing out the albums that made the biggest impression on me in 2017, in order, my absolute favourites at the top.

Take a look at my other Best of 2017 lists: My 25 Favourite Concert Photos of 2017 and My 50 Favourite Songs of 2017.

I caught Bully for the first time when they appeared at Field Trip in 2016. My pics from that show are here. I loved their music and energy then, so I knew I wanted to catch them again. I got that opportunity when they swung through Toronto for a show at Lee's Palace that celebrated their third time in Toronto and the release of their new album Losing.

Bully play a fantastic blend of garage/grunge/punk/alternative rock that brings together a lot of my favourite things about 90s rock with Alicia Bognanno's personality, solid songwriting and amazing vocal delivery throughout. Check out a bunch of their tunes below and don't miss Bully when they hit up your town.

Nashville's Bully played Field Trip in Toronto this past Saturday. They mentioned that this show marked their second time in Toronto.

The band delivered some great sunny day grunge punk. I have wanted to see this band for a while now and I'm so glad I did. They really kicked ass and their music sounds so good live. It's the best of what I loved in the 90s with a fresh perspective.

Now I'm just looking forward to the next time.

Give this band a listen:
