NXNE 2015: Talk In Tongues at The Opera House - Concert Pictures

 

Talk in Tongues are from LA. They just set out on tour with Blonde Redhead when they appeared as the first band on stage at The Opera House on the first night of NXNE. Their music is atmospheric, trippy and dreamy, with just enough groove to keep you moving. Their début album Alone with a Friend is out now.

NXNE 2015: Anamai at The Opera House - Concert Pictures

Anamai is the experimental folk project of Anna Mayberry, also of HSY, and David Psutka. They were second up on stage at The Opera House on the first night of NXNE 2015, opening for Blonde Redhead. Their music drones with a slow, deliberate intensity that weighs on the listener with atmospheric sounds and ethereal vocals.

NXNE 2015: Blonde Redhead at The Opera House - Concert Pictures

Blonde Redhead headlined the first night of NXNE at The Opera House. This show was one of the Northby Advaned shows that fans who either wanted to guarantee attendance, or for those who only wanted to catch one or two high priofile shows, could purchase advanced tickets to. If you wanted to take your chances on admission, you could show up at the door with a Platinum Wristband or cash. Regular wristbands weren't allowed admission to these shows.

The New York trio hit the stage and delivered their intricate, layered, ethereal pop music with casual confidence and tons of NYC style. The audience packed in at the front to enjoy every audio and visual nuance.

Palehound at The Horseshoe - Concert Pictures

Palehound appeared at The Legendary Horseshoe Tavern on June 5 opening for Speedy Ortiz. They're from Boston and this show marked their first time in Canada.

I loved the grimy 90s guitar riffs and buckets of passion in Ellen Kempner's delivery. The band play passionate tunes with loose riffs mixed with tight rhythm section. Kempner's vocals drip emotion.

Their next album, Dry Food, will be out August 14. Check out the first single "Molly" below.

Give this band a listen and I'd recommend seeing them in your town.

Future Villains at The Sound Academy - Concert Pictures

I was a teenage metal head in the 80s. A lot of that music hasn't lasted well for me. There are bands like Steel Panther who capture the energy and spirit of the 80s for our amusement. Opening for Steel Panther at The Sound Academy in both 2015 and 2014 were rockers Future Villains.

It was heavy metal wails, crunchy and screaming guitars and pounding bass and drums at The Sound Academy opening for the band keeping hair metal alive, Steel Panther.  We even got a cool cover of Deep Purple's "Highway Star". If there were more quality hair metal bands, I'd probably listen to more of it. It may not be in fashion but it sure is fun.

TURF Feature: Desaparecidos

Desaparecidos is Conor Oberst's alternative / punk band that formed in 2001 and broke up in 2002 due at least in part on the increasing success of Oberst's other band, Bright Eyes. They're back playing again and are part of the incredible line-up that's been put together for this year's Toronto Urban Roots Festival. If you're in Toronto, do not miss their set at TURF on September 18.
