Royal Mountain Records Festival held its inaugural event at Hamilton, Ontario's Royal Botanical Gardens Arboretum this year. It was a fantastically well-run and chill festival on an absolutely beautiful site, with a fantastic line-up of some of my favourite Canadian bands. I truly hope that this festival becomes an annual event and that they even expand to include another stage on this wonderful grounds.

First off, the site is gorgeous. I love that the back of the stage was open to show the canopy of trees behind. I love the layout of the grounds showing the natural beauty of the arboretum. The stage looked amazing and changed scenes during the day. At first the beautiful foliage was on display, then the settings sun shone through. Then the leaves were lit up for night. It's a wondrous site I would love to experience many times over.

Then there was the lineup and organization. The festival was so excellently curated to provide an amazing vibe throughout the day. Polished and quick changeovers between acts with a cool set of tunes to fill the time between bands made the whole day enjoyable. Every member of the team that I encountered was friendly and accommodating. Everyone from the food vendors to the security staff to the first aid attendants worked together to make the day special.

Just one criticism; there was no running water on site to fill water bottles. Hopefully the RBG team can figure out how to make this happen for future years. Especially on a hot day such as this one, having the ability to fill your own water bottle is essential. And it leads to a more environmentally friendly festival with less waste without having to buy and dispose of one-time use bottles.

Until next year...

Montreal post-punk band Ought played a mind bending set at Royal Mountain Records Festival. I really like these guys, their performance and their hypnotic grooves that grow on you. They've got a totally unselfconscious uniqueness that sets them apart and has to draw you in.

This was far from my first Ought show. Take a peek at my coverage from shows at The Horseshoe for CMW, Lee's Palace and Hillside 2016.

Check out some of their tunes below. Their latest album Room Inside the World is out now.

"Desire"

"Disgraced In America"

"These Three Things"

"Men for Miles"

"Beautiful Blue Sky"

Thursday, May 10 was the Sleepless Records showcase at The Horseshoe Tavern with secret guest July Talk.

It hasn't been a long time since I last saw Montreal post-punk/post-rock band Ought. It was actually back in early March at Lee's Palace. Before that, it was the summer of 2016 at Hillside.

This time it was in The Legendary Horseshoe Tavern, for Canadian Music Week, for the Audiotree North launch party.

They played a set mostly made up of tunes from their latest album Room Inside the World, punctuated by perhaps their best known tunes "Men for Miles" and "Beautiful Blue Sky"from 2015's Sun Coming Down. As I've said before, I love the contradictions that this band rolls into their uniqueness; the way the rigid yet dynamic and jittery beats and riffs meet the impassioned and character-driven vocals, coming together into something that grows on me more and more with every listening. Their sound has also grown, evolved and even stretched out with richness, emotion and space. I dive in and stay a while.

Check out Ought's music:

"Disgraced In America", "These 3 Things", "Desire" and "Disaffectation"

"Men For Miles"

"Beautiful Blue Skies"

Last Wednesday, I got to see Montreal post-punks Ought once again. The first time was back at Hillside a couple of years ago. My pics and thoughts on that show are here.

They've got a new album Room Inside the World that just came out a few weeks ago and a ton of great tunes from their past. I find the music almost hypnotic with rigid beats that manage to be groovy and keep your body moving. I love how singer Tim Darcy seems to deliver his songs in characters.

This band wears their influences on their sleeve and delivers music that is uniquely ambitious and never derivative.

Check out a bunch of tunes and go see the band live, where they truly shine.

"These 3 Things"

"Disgraced in America"

"Desire"

"Habit"

"Take Everything"

"Men for Miles"

"Beautiful Blue Sky"
